“Michael” is 78 and was living with his older brother. With no immediate family nearby, no one was aware of Michael’s cognitive decline. When his brother passed away, Michael was unable to take care of himself. He had been living in an environment that was physically unsafe for him, and he needed to move urgently.
Michael, a veteran, and a very sweet and pleasant man, moved into the Neighborhood House. Because no one was familiar with Michael’s routines and habits, we were not aware that he was a wanderer and had difficulty sleeping. The first couple of days and nights were a challenge. Thankfully our building is equipped with safety features to prevent residents from wandering.
Most people would automatically put someone like Michael directly into a dedicated Memory Care Unit – a locked wing where he would be confined to a small area surrounded by other residents with varying degrees of dementia. The Neighborhood House has a unique approach to dementia care. We do not have a locked unit, but we are designed to manage residents with dementia. By working with Michael’s family and his new doctors, we were able to come up with an individualized care plan specific to his needs. Michael is doing well at the Neighborhood House. He no longer wanders, he sleeps better, and he is socializing with the other residents.
MICHAEL SAVES OVER $35,000 PER YEAR COMPARED TO OTHER MEMORY CARE FACILITIES
